Palin-Bashing Press Keeps Swinging And Missing

"What is wrong with these people?" was the nigh-upon-universal reaction among conservatives at the GOP convention this week. Liberal reporters inquired of conservative journalists, Republican delegates, right-leaning janitors, free-market short-order cooks, even the guys walking around in elephant suits: Will Sarah Palin drop out? What about the Eagleton Option?

For those who don't know, the Eagleton Option refers to Thomas Eagleton, George McGovern's first VP pick in 1972, who was forced to withdraw because allegations of mental illness.

A hybrid of myth and deceit peddled by the chattering bandersnatches of the Democratic Party's backup communications offices at MSNBC and other press-release transmission belts of the Obama campaign, the whole pseudo-story was surely the brightest flare in the bonfire of asininity in St. Paul this week.

Of course, it was hardly the only journalistic will-o'-the-wisp unleashed from the media bog. The claim that Palin was a Buchananite -- and hence an acolyte of a "Nazi sympathizer" according to Florida Rep. Robert Wexler -- was not true. The claims she cut funding for pregnant teens, that she was a member of the more-goofy-than-scary
Alaska Independence Party, that Trig Palin -- her special-needs baby -- was really her daughter's: these were all bogus. As for the even more disgusting smears peddled at the Daily Kos and one blogger at The Atlantic -- smears that drove much of the prurient investigation into the Palin family's privacy by more reputable sources -- they were as untrue as they were repugnant.

But it was the Eagleton canard that spoke volumes. First, just as a matter of reportorial fact, as opposed to Keith Olbermann clicking his ruby-red slippers and wishing it were so, the idea that the rank and file of the GOP wanted her gone before her speech was distilled nonsense. Now, it's plain hilarious.

In the wake of Palin's performance Wednesday night, there's vastly more support among conservatives for flipping the McCain-Palin ticket to the Palin-McCain ticket. Send McCain to attend the funerals and cut the ribbons! Put the lipsticked pit bull at the lead of the Alaskanized GOP sled!

One good barometer of conservative support: Rush Limbaugh, who is rumored to kick his cat across the room in rage when he hears the name "McCain," now calls the Arizona senator "John McGenius."

I think we can safely drop the word “Palin” from the Palin-haters, the left have no facts, just hate. Feminists who say that all husbands rape their wives are some how so concerned about the “health and well-being of Sarah’s family, though they still happily flush 1.3 million babies a year down the toilet in the “final solution” to social problems, and now support the man who wants a 4th trimester abortion rights for the kindly “ladies of personal conviction.” Such hallmarks of personally integrity, they gladly prefer the “free and innocent” spirits of the mountain lions that sometimes kill and eat an occasional runner or child, and of course say that’s just “natures way.”

Jack,

You're holding a magnifying glass to the far left and holding what you see up as par for all people who tend to identify themselves as 'liberal'. I cannot for the life of me understand why people like you who, otherwise seems like a normal smart individual, would resort to this desperate grasping of straws just so you can demonize a whole group of people who you don't agree with. Well, at least I can say you're good at it, what with people like Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and Ann Coulter to emulate how could you go wrong?

Agreeing with Jonah Goldberg puts you pretty high on my 'no hope of intelligent debate' list...anyways take it for what you will.

Palin... drop the L and you get a real republican.

The loser party that thought bush was great, any more winning combos you pack of cretinous losers?

Oh yeah let's get a skunk from Alaska, put some lipstick on it and call it VP.

If the moronic repugnantcans can't do normal research into a candidate and find someone that doesn't say one thing and then do another like palin and her ultra right wing wacko friends, (Always hypocritical, always wrong, and always running their mouth.) then they need to give up the race and retire, and let people that care about America run for office.

America has had it with lying criminals calling themselves republicans.

Actually I come from a time that Liberal was a good thing, and I'm mad as hell that the "loon beams" have defamed it so badly. Were that the Center of political discourse not move so far left over the last 30 years that JFK is a "right winger". Can you tell me with a straight face that and tell me I haven't heard and known "leftists" as I described?

As always, my criticism is for those who are hard left, do you know what people like Al Gore, whose made an estimated $100 million dollars on the slowly eroding man-caused global warming, would do to our country? If you were on his "side" why would I have a reasonable expectation of a productive dialogue with you?

1)    1.3 million babies are aborted each year, the majority of them being of minorities, used as a solution to the morning after "oops". That is not what the democrat platform has been saying in the recent past, Safe, Legal and Rare. To save the life of the mother, I could go along with that, unfortunately many I know of are like the one young lady who wanted an abortion so that her boyfriend wouldn't get jealous of her carrying her husband's baby. Safe, Legal, Rare?

2)    BO tried to stop legislation that would protect a baby if it was given birth as a result of an attempted abortion. This would end the “4th term abortion” of babies being left to die, in one case the baby was watched by the nurse dieing for 45 minutes. Partial birth abortions are done by turning the baby to coming out feet first and have the head bashed in and brain sucked out, this is done because the baby would be considered born if the head and (I believe) shoulder is exposed, as long as the whole head is not exposed, the gruesome killing can take place.

3)    Apparently you haven’t seen the news reports of the animal activists out raged by the caring more for the animal’s well being than the victims. Like the following attacks http://tchester.org/sgm/lists/lion_attacks_ca.html. And the eco terrorists than defend them http://www.azstarnet.com/news/106901. In another In 2004, Palo Alto police fatally shot a mountain lion as it lounged in a camphor tree in a residential neighborhood, triggering protests from animal rights activists. http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_9875323?IADID=Search-www.mercurynews.com-www.mercurynews.com

I haven’t seen any of your posts, so you have me at a bit of a disadvantage, on your positions, but the “left of center” more socially liberal I’ve tried to have a reasonable discourse with usually end up in name calling and unintelligible feelings without much facts. The conservative people you’ve named I have differences with, like the left, not all of the “opposition” are homogenous; unlike you, I assume you are capable of independent thought. I do however see an increasingly stronger pull to what appears Democrat talking points. Bill Clinton is the generator of the current reign of politics of personal destruction. The liberal media is driving in droves people to support Palin in obviously unfair and hateful attacks.

If you don’t support “4th trimester abortions”, beast over human, then the critical comments about the horrendous imbalance of thoughts and actions expose those who do as hypocrites and aren’t meant for you.

Here’s what I do, you may want to try this, every time I see the term “right-winger”, conservative, republican, I consider the source, decide if it applies to me, then simply go on. I will respond, rarely do I comment without cause directly unless the statement is so egregious.

Jack,

Of course you know lefties like that...I know lefties like that. No I don't support people like Al Gore. I believe enviromentalism and conservation are important...but not to the point where I cheer everytime a hiker meets his maker at the jaws of a wild animal.

So let me try and respond to your points:

1 & 2. I think I can combine these two. The way I took your OP is that you're commenting on the hypocrisy of those who claim to 'care' about Bristol Palin while at the same time support abortion. I agree with you there somewhat. If I'm not wrong I believe Bristol is going to marry the father and have the baby. To me that means she's doing the right thing therefore this is a non-issue. The reason I believe the media and the 'loon beams' jumped on this is because they saw the hypocrisy of the Republican party who has long claimed to be the party of family values, trying to glibly sweep this under the rug and then tell the rest of us we're being prudes by mentioning it. All that said, I tend to be pro choice. Don't get me wrong, I don't like abortion and I would strongly encourage an expecting mother to give the child up for adoption so that it at least has a chance. However, I believe in some cases such as rape or incest that an abortion is a viable option. So called 4th term abortions are just wrong no matter how you look at it.

3. I have seen said reports. Not much to say really, sometimes these things have to be done.

You don't see me posting much because other posters usually beat me to what I wanted to say (profanity laced name calling excluded), so no point beating a dead horse.

As for your last two paragraphs, I'm going to take that as my 'welcome to the commenters pool'. And Jack, thanks. If you're ever in NC, stop by we'll have a beer and talk politics all day.

"The left have no facts"...Priceless... No, I'm not even going to bother arguing that one. Seriously, people need to quit using these partisan cliches on both sides of the aisle. Either side can make that argument, though I would point out that these "Elitists" that everyone seems to hate are generally disliked because they are better educated and tend to appeal to logic rather than emotion, so "the Left have no facts" is a BIT less true than "the Right have no facts."

On to my critique of the article: I simply think it's ironic that Palin's celebrity mimics Obama's so closely. She's as "untouchable" as Obama, and every bit as much "The One" to the Right. Ultimately, people need to get over all of the hype, on both sides, and get down to the issues. I know Karl Rove killed the concept of intelligent debate in the American psyche, but we really need to grow up as a country and get back to reality: Don't tell me that "Barack Obama isn't ready to lead" based on the fact that he's "Going to raise taxes for everyone." That's relevant how? Don't tell me John McCain is too old to be president. His health might be  concern, but he's still pretty sharp. He's not the same as Bush, either... There's a lot more wrong with the way Bush led than his policies, in which McCain could be a better president, even using the same platform.

Just be smarter, people. Everyone can be an "Elitist" if we try hard enough.

Thank you for the "dialogue", actually I hold a bit more concise criticism of those "feminists" who HATE Sarah Palin because she is a conservative, but in this particular circumstance, the “faux outrage” about this little 17 year old, trashing her to get at McCain, while driving 13 year olds to get abortions without their parents knowing about it, is just a tad on the hypocritical side, and NAACP types who hate Clarence Thomas, Michael Steele, Condolesea Rice, and Colin Powell because they are conservative or even used ruthless hatred about BO, when he was first running, said some of most racist things about him I have heard on either sides.

I try to post to learn, not to teach, nor to “convert”, in running down information on Palin for instance, I found some things “that make her human”, as we all are. I hope you wouldn’t let your voice not be heard, as one Guy said, “there is wisdom in many councilors.” Your take is as important as anyone’s, in my cosmos everyone is there for a purpose and I hope you will let your voice be heard. There are vast libraries of information I’ll never know, doesn’t mean I don’t want to know.

One thing I’ve learned in my short life is that I need to listen to everyone or my opinions can overwhelm my reason. Please comment anytime, and thanks for the invite, although the last of my surname there in NC, sat in the coffee shops arguing against slavery in the 1850’s, but was put in charge of Ft Sumter until the end of the war. Our ancestors have been kicked out of 3 or 4 countries for our geneticly pointed opinion sharing including our country of origin.

Have a great day : )

“The left have no facts”

Forgive me since I didn’t see that “quote” in the post, I want to rule out you haven’t misread my statement. My statement was, “the “left of center” more socially liberal I’ve tried to have a reasonable discourse with usually end up in name calling and unintelligible feelings without much facts”, I have gone to great lengths to cite sources, not so my counterparts. Having had many enjoyable online dialogues, that is a matter of experience, not prejudice nor judgment of their "feelings". I think "Stug" has done the best job of citing source “facts” to back up his "feelings", granted facts can be simply derived from opinions of someone else, hopefully with a close expertise in the topic of discussion, i.e., if I find a blog on a topic I try to go to their source to make sure that the parent source isn’t being “edited” for convenience or taken out of context.

If, like Bob De Niro said, “you talkin’ to me”, you simply misread my statement, we all do that.

"the left have no facts, just hate" Wrong discussion, reference the comments of the circumstance of Palin's daughter other than she was pregnant, and the cause of the youngest baby's "special needs", being riding on an airplane while pregnant. I can document the quotes of those saying she (the 17 year old), "ran wild, like Britney Spears" and that the youngest baby is actually the other love child of the 17 year old or a fake ebay page offering the baby for sale by a left wing blog or various salon.com leftist slights far more virulent, but am loathed to. Admittedly a statement that needed to be more specific, most of the time I hear I’m too verbose, please accept this as an apology of sorts.

I would agree that statements like, “Oh yeah let's get a skunk from Alaska, put some lipstick on it and call it VP” or “if the moronic repugnantcans”, are particularly “issue oriented.” Perhaps you found some facts with out just hate in the statements, I didn’t. The gentleman has a constitutional right to say what he feels, I gave some small service to help insure that right for him, for you, and not the least of all, myself.

Thanks for pointing out what disturbed you, we all need to be kept “honest”, and I genuinely thank you, whether or not I agree with you or your position.
