ST. PAUL, Minn. -- She's gonna make it after all.

Considering the location of the Republican convention, the theme song had already been written for the Sarah Palin campaign. It comes from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," based in the Twin Cities.

"Who can turn the world on with her smile? Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile? Well, it's you, girl, and you should know it; with each glance and every little movement, you show it. Love is all around, no need to waste it. You can have a town, why don't you take it? You're gonna make it after all."

With the announcement of Palin as John McCain's running mate, the Republican Party transformed overnight from a lackluster, demoralized group of people largely willing to vote for McCain out of a lack of alternatives, to an eager population ready to donate their time, money and expertise. All of a sudden, people who felt like they didn't have a stake in the election became enthusiastically engaged. At one pro-life event here, a woman announced, "I'm really voting for Palin, not McCain." There's something about Palin that connects with and comforts members of the right, while threatening those on the left.

In the days after McCain's pick became public, we saw left-wing blogs
write the most ridiculous and unsubstantiated claims about Palin and her family. These digital scandalmongers even won a victory of sorts, forcing the Palin family to announce, via the McCain campaign, the pregnancy of its unwed, teenage daughter. The left evinced no small amount of satisfaction that they had smoked out a family matter. As lurid, tabloid-ready stories issued forth, conservatives both rushed to defend Palin and got a little nervous. Had she been vetted properly? Could there be other, more dire skeletons lurking?

Creeping dread began to dampen the initial enthusiasm for the Alaskan governor. There were too many growing distractions, perhaps the biggest being the question of experience. McCain had previously said a vice president should be ready to assume the presidency from the get-go. Doubt and uncertainty grew. But then she spoke. Not only did she demonstrate a depth of moral character, but she also showed an adeptness on policy, both foreign and domestic. But most importantly, she exhibited a love of country, and a respect and support for military service. She came off as an everywoman. A mom who wanted to do her part at home and in the world, an instinct that led her into politics and ultimately onto the podium of the Xcel Center with McCain.

"she also showed an adeptness on policy, both foreign and domestic"

Really? In her convention speech, what foreign and domestic policy positions did Ms. Palin articulate that would characterize her as "adept" in these areas?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the McCain team was grasping at any chance to steer the spotlight away from Obama, who earned it honestly through hard work, honesty and leadership. The choice of Palin does nothing more than pander to the most Reactionary base of the Republican party.

The implication that any woman, and especially ardent Hillary Clinton supporters, can be co-opted to vote for McCain simply because of Palin's gender, and in spite of her extreme right-wing views on abortion, gun control and the separation of church and state, is an insult to women at every point on the political spectrum.

The only things Palin and Hillary have in common are gender and motherhood. It's time to take the gloves off and force Palin to air her true views in the public forum. All one has to do is dig a little deeper into her background to find dozens of excellent reasons to vote for Obama.

Such a transparent and demeaning ploy should not be allowed to stand.

"It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the McCain team was grasping at any chance to steer the spotlight away from Obama, who earned it honestly through hard work, honesty and leadership."

Where did you get that from? A pro-Obama flier? Obama hasn't done a single thing to earn all of the attention he is getting. He is standing on the shoulders of greater men before him, and he is playing the political game. He is a very charismatic speaker, and after 8 years of a President who makes Barney Fife look like a lingual genius, I think the media and some of the public are latching on to him a little prematurely. Let's put this in perspective, people - Obama is a politician, not the savior of the free world.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are also a politicians.  When they draw attention away from Obama, they are just doing their job.  The reason that you hear so much about Obama is that he is usually doing the same thing.  As Harry Truman once said, "If you can't stand the heat, STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN!"

I will have to grant you that Obama is a hard worker.  It takes a lot of effort to write TWO books about a poor subject.  Honesty and leadership?  I must have blinked twice, because I missed them both.

Oh, the shade of Maggie Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood, aka Murder Incorporated) must be rollin' in her eugenics filled grave for a mother who actually thinks being a mother is Job #1, married to a husband who thinks being a father is Job #1. Not to mention poor Ms Friedan having to look up from where ever she is and see that the calculating mass of narcissism with the testicular lock box, didn’t make the gate, but the little mom from Wasilla accomplished all that feminists said they were about - home, hearth and opportunity, some one has a “karmic” sense of humor.

That's the funniest thing about this whole situation (actually, I would be laughing if it weren't so pathetic) - the feminists finally have a woman who has a great shot at breaking the "glass ceiling", but they just can't stand her because she's not from "their side" (read: Democrats).

Sarah Palin is an example of a staunch feminist's worst nightmare - a successful woman who has found a great balance between family and career. Staunch feminists can't stand it because it makes their position irrelevant, and it was done without Affirmative Action.
