Republicans are finally worried that their failure to attract Hispanic voters in this year's election spells trouble — perhaps for decades. But they're not sure what to do about it. Moderates in the party are pushing for more efforts at "inclusion," which usually means elevating a few Hispanics to symbolic but visible positions in national, state, and local politics. But with no Cabinet positions to hand out and so few prominent Hispanic elected officials to promote within their ranks, Republicans clearly won't gain much leverage with this strategy.

Some conservative Republicans, on the other hand, are either in denial or think they can control the problem by limiting the growth in the Hispanic immigrant population. (Just ask the 14 out of 16 hard-line, anti-immigration Republicans who lost their seats this time around to pro-comprehensive reform Democrats how well this worked at the polls.) But even if hard-liners were successful at stopping illegal immigration and dramatically reducing the number of Hispanic immigrants admitted legally, it wouldn't solve the simple demographic fact that U.S.-born Hispanics have higher fertility rates than whites or blacks. Hispanics will become a larger share of the population for the foreseeable future, though intermarriage rates will likely diminish their ethnic identification over
time.

Still other Republicans hope that the party's message of self-reliance, low taxes, defense of life and support for traditional marriage will win over entrepreneurial and religious Hispanics. But while I think these positions have tremendous appeal and are the bedrock on which to build support in the Hispanic community, they're not enough.

The first thing Republicans have to overcome is a growing belief among Hispanics that they aren't welcome in the party — or in America for that matter. According to a recent survey by America's Voice — a liberal, pro-immigrant group — two-thirds of Hispanics think that discrimination against them has increased in the last two years because of the tone of the immigration debate. Republicans have to deal with the consequences.

Here's a radical suggestion — but one that wouldn't compromise Republican or conservative principles. Why doesn't the Republican Party launch an aggressive Welcome to America Campaign? The idea would be to set up a network of volunteers to reach out to Hispanic immigrants, and especially their American-born children, to teach English, American history and civics. Estimates are that four in 10 Hispanic voters in this year's election were naturalized citizens — and 75 percent of them cast their votes for President-elect Barack Obama.

I have no problem helping a legal immigrant learn and earn American Citizenship.  I do have a problem helping an illegal immigrant flout the laws that place him in front of the line to the legal immigrant.

If they are illegal they are, by definition, criminal.  They are here against US law.  To welcome them, to provide aid, is the same as aiding and abetting any common mugger, robber or rapist.

I beleive American's will always welcome our newest legal immigrants.  We have a strong tradition of immigration.  And throughout our brief history, though, immigrants adapted to our customs, history, laws and traditions.  Our latest wave of illegal immigration does not follow that familiar pattern, rather there is the demand that American adapt to them.  Hence, press 1 for english.

To All LEGAL immigrants...WELCOME TO AMERICA!

You would not have to deport the illegals. A cheaper and easier way is to give them notice that they have 30 days to leave the country. ANY ILLEGAL caught here AFTER 30 days will face PUBLIC EXECUTION! I GUARANTEE they will leave on their own then. If they are ILLEGAL, THEY DO NOT DESERVE ANY HELP AT ALL!!!!! Just ask any LEGAL immigrant!

What, exactly, is a legal immigrant anymore. With all of the amnesties that have been given over the years, it is likely that most of those 40% of Hispanic voters who are naturalized citizens...were originally illegal immigrants. I know several people who originally came into this country illegally, but who are now legal. Some got amnesties and others used forged birth certificates to gain citizenship. So, what exactly is a legal immigrant? Is that someone who stuck around long enough to gain citizenship through an amnesty or through subterfuge? Is that what it has come to mean to be a legal immigrant? Does giving birth to children in this country when you are an illegal alien entitle you to stay? I don’t think so.

Our immigration system is broken, but I'm not holding my breath until our government fixes it. It seems that Congress' idea of fixing the problem is to just grant amnesty to another wave of illegals...and the waves just keep getting bigger because of it. That is NOT the answer. The only way that the spigot can ever be turned off is to make it unprofitable to come to the US illegally. The Social Security Administration (SSA) could tell you where almost every illegal alien is living and working. The illegals must have a social security number (SSN) to get work in most cases. Since they can't get an SSN through legal means, they just use a made up number. Most of the time, that means they are using the SSN of a US citizen fraudulently. Since the SSA doesn't want to credit real citizens with contributions they didn't make, they segregate all contributions that came from sources other than the original name associated with the SSN. The monies from those sources are used by Social Security as a kind of slush fund, since there is no obligation to use them for later payout. Therefore, they have no incentive to report illegals. Illegals commonly change their assumed names often, so they don’t go over the poverty line on any given name. That way they can file income tax returns to get full refunds (and even earned income credit) for their different assumed names.

If you want to make it unprofitable to come here illegally, require the SSA to make two notifications every time they identify sources other than the original name tied to the number. Force the SSA to notify the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), so that no tax refunds can be made to the assumed number by the illegal alien (this should not affect the legal holder of the number). Also, force SSA to notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), so ICE agents can pay the person a visit at their residence and place of employment. Then just enforce the existing laws. Deport all illegals and confiscate ALL of their assets (If you think that is harsh, that is what Mexico does with illegals). If the illegals want to take their children with them back to their country of origin, that is their business. Prosecute and fine any business that hires illegal aliens. Force employers to check contractors too, since that is a favorite loophole illegals like to jump through. Employers can easily verify an employee’s (or contractor’s) citizenship by running the SSN and checking the name that comes up. If it isn’t the same as the name given by the employee, then they have the responsibility to report that to ICE or face the consequences.

There IS a solution to this problem; but it ISN’T pandering to people who have broken the law. Should we welcome Hispanics? For those who enter through legal immigration by all means we should welcome them, but not those who have abused the system. No way!
